Where’s Fluffy?

I love movies, and as such I tend to watch a lot of them.  Sometimes the movie reaches into my mind and I take from it things and ideas that others may not.  i.e. they make me think!

My latest adventure was Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. This movie came out in late 2008 to mediocre reviews.  It is after all what I would call a smart high school movie.  The idea of the film is that there is a band playing somewhere in New York City, NY and the principle cast is searching for this band.  While Nick and Nora look for where the concert is going on (it is only rumored at places, not publicized) they have to deal with friends, ex-girlfriends, ex-boyfriends, and drunks.  They are both at a crossroads in life, Nick is a loner,straight-edger who plays bass in a band that while ok, is not great. He is just going through high school trying to get over his ex-girlfriend who dumped him not days before. While Nora is struggling with wether to go to school or take a job at her father’s recording studio.

While I was watching this flick I came to look at the driving force of the cast, “Where’s Fluffy?”, as a metaphor for life.  We are all trying to find that one thing.  That light at the end of the tunnel. That goal that we are driving towards. For some it would be wealth. Others it would be family, or shelter, or a warm meal. And for even more it might very well be as simple as a bed to sleep in that night. Well, that may not be a simple task. Especially in these hard financial times. Times where the unemployment is at a record high. People are searching, some fruitlessly, for a job. So that they might make that rent or mortgage payment. So they won’t lose the roof over their heads.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this film, and most films I watch. But that is how I tend to watch films these days, looking for that nugget of pop phycology that I might learn a bit more. And so I ask you, do you know where/what your fluffy is?

“The Cult of Done”…

I read blogs, A LOT of blogs…  One that I read is Smarterware. This particular post was by Smarterware.  This post titled “The Cult of Done Manifesto by Bre Pettis and Kio Stark” The meat is a list… a manifesto of sorts…

1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
3. There is no editing stage.
4. Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
7. Once you’re done you can throw it away.
8. Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.
9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
11. Destruction is a variant of done.
12. If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
13. Done is the engine of more.

There is just something about this list that I like…   it is a good way to look at things.

What I really want…

As some of you know I have a tattoo. Yep, that’s right Jon Lillie has a tattoo!!!! It is a custom design, a celtic cross with tribal flames coming out the sides. It sits on my left arm, about half way up between the elbow and shoulder.

So by now you must be realizing what it is that I really want… I want another tattoo!!! I’m thinking of a half sleave or my entire shoulder on my right side. But the issue comes up as to what to get.  I’m thinking of a tribute to my grandfather who died in June, a war veteran, and a man whom I will never forget.  So far I have an idea of a flag at half mast, with his name and the date of his birth/death. But beyond that I am a little lost as that will not take up very much space I think.  I want one that is reverent, and meaningful to me.

Some of you may be thinking, “where did this come from?” It isn’t a new thought or want, I have wanted a second one since the day I got my first one. They are that addicting.  But the cost, lack of know exactly what I want, and the lack of know a quality artist I can trust to be healthy and safe when it comes to putting something permanently on my body. Yes, getting a tattoo can be dangerous… infection, disease, and the like is possible. That is why it is good know who your artist is and that they can be trusted to do what you have asked of them.

If you guys have any ideas please feel free to post them… and “do not get one” is not acceptable, sorry.
